Nightlife Is Your Dior

Patti Hansen

Christian Dior, 1976

Inside Gem:

Chris von Wangenheim fashioned images that were highly seductive and took control by borrowing from the femme fatale codes of Film Noir, with ultra-feminine, assertive and chic women. He loved pointing out the contradiction of rich society’s elegance and decadence.

This image featuring Patti Hansen in front of a burning car is part of a campaign that lasted from 1974 to 1977 for Dior.  She’s wearing a coral-and-gold gown and a long brown fur cape. The scene is set in the dead of night and only a chain-link fence, implying a destitute urban neighborhood that a gown-and-fur- clad woman would not normally haunt, obstructs the barren concrete landscape. It seems that the adrenaline of the crash has made our heroine flippant in the perilous situation. And she is dressed to kill.
